How To Set and Achieve Your Goal
Before talking about how to set goal, you need to understand the actual benefits of goal-setting. The real benefit of setting goal is the person you have to become during the process in order to achieve your goal. Getting things will only make you happy for a short time. Goals provide focus and a map so we know what to do to get us from where we are to where we want to be. It forces us to become better. It stretches and grows us. Here are some ways to help you get started:
#1. Write down clearly what you want
Some studies show that people who write down their goals accomplished way more than those who did not. Many successful people write down their goals every day and carry them around. You can write it in your journal before you go to bed and after you wake up. This way you can train your conscious and subconscious mind to help you see more things and opportunities that can help you get closer to your target. Your goal needs to be measurable and specific as Tony said clarity is power. You cannot manage what you cannot measure.
#2. Why your goal is a MUST for you?
Understanding your big "Why" will help you achieve your goal faster because you will be driven. Why do you want to achieve your goal? How would this make me feel? How will it change your life and those around you? Your reasons for achieving your goal will fuel you and help you stay laser-focused, especially when the journey gets rough and there are many obstacles and distractions around you.
#3. Take Massive Action
Once you know what you want and why you want, it's time you need to take massive action. You can get more certainty by modeling those who already accomplished what you want to achieve. The fastest way to succeed is to model someone who already achieved it. Be flexible and try different ways when things don't work out as Tony said "Stay committed to your decisions, but stay flexible in your approach." Keep practicing and making process until you succeed.
"The path to success is to take massive, determined action." - Tony Robbins
Top Success Lessons in Business and Life
Tony Robbins is one of the world’s best names when it comes to self-help and personal development. He was able to transform many lives with the help of his books, talks, and inspirational messages that can serve as a catalyst for people to make a positive change in their lives.
There are a lot of things that you can learn from Tony! Here are 10 of those lessons that you can apply in your life that can possibly make a positive change in your career, relationship, and general outlook on life.
1. What matters most is what other people don’t see
Ever wondered why athletes like Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant excel at what they do? Do they simply have that gift that other people don’t have? How did they make it possible to surpass the rest of other young and gifted athletes in the NBA?
According to Tony, “It’s what you do in private that you will be rewarded for in public”. Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan, aside from being talented athletes took the time to practice, hone, and push their skills like nobody else did during their time in the NBA.
The same principle can be applied at work or in other facets of your life in general. By not doing something different, and extraordinary, expect only a mediocre outcome with whatever it is that you are doing.
2. Build your habits
Tony is a believer of habits and systems. He established a system for Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff that is now being used by other CEOs worldwide. In fact, a simple habit that he follows is his own ritual in the morning. He takes a cold plunge every morning in order to signal the body that it is time to work.
Regardless if you are a student or already a professional, having your own ritual and habits can make the hard things seem easy.
3. Reward is only for those who persevere
Life can be full of challenges that can sometimes frustrate even the most hardworking and dedicated individuals.
Tony is a believer in life’s challenges. However, it is how we demonstrate grit that makes a difference. According to him, “I believe life is constantly testing us for our level of commitment, and life’s greatest rewards are reserved for those who demonstrate a never-ending commitment to act until they achieve”.
4. Read a lot
Tony is a wide reader. He studied speed reading and he even once finished one book per day. It is a simple idea that reading can help widen your perspective and give you fresh ideas that you can apply in your life. You’ll be able to learn from someone’s experience, wisdom, and even hasten your development. Among books that he recommends include Ray Kurzweil’s The Singularity Is Near and essays from Ralph Waldo Emerson.
5. Spend some time with winners
According to Tony, spending some time with high achievers can have a number of benefits. Not only are you going to learn a thing or two about his or her field, you will also learn a lot from the approach that a high achiever does in order to excel at what he or she does.
Other than the lessons that you will learn along the way, it is also possible to forge relationships that can come in handy in the future.
6. Always stay hungry
Working hard out of necessity is different from working hard because you find pleasure on what you do. According to Tony, one thing that is common among successful individuals is hunger. The pursuit of a dream can lead to great things. It can help individuals become creative, and even turn to innovation in order to get what they want.
7. Your own story can prevent your success
“The only thing that’s keeping you from getting what you want is the story you keep telling yourself”. A lot of times, it is easy to rationalize difficult challenges in order to settle for what is convenient. It is possible that we’ve been designed as human beings to choose the path of least resistance. Unfortunately, it is possible that the biggest enemy isn’t our circumstances but rather our mindset. By not falling into a trap of excuses, it is possible to redefine what we thought is already our limit.
By silencing our very own alibis, it is possible to find our way towards accomplishing our goals and even find success eventually.
8. Focus directs our energy
If you fail to achieve any of your goals, regardless if it is small or big, it is possible that somewhere, your focus isn’t at 100%. 100% focus weighs so much more than interest. In fact, one sample that Tony mentioned is the fact that not a lot of people try to become a master at one area in life. A lot of us simply skim through different interests, jobs, and even hobbies, not thinking that we can really excel in those areas.
In addition to this, he also mentioned that we should be results-focused rather than activity-focused. This helps individuals come up with actions that are more efficient without feeling burnt out.
9. Small difference goes a long way
If you’ll watch high-level athletes, a lot of things they do is a battle of inches. Chess grandmasters win or lose games via small strategic blunders committed by themselves or by the opponent. The same thing can be applied to what we do. Whether it is our health or finances, small changes that we apply in our lives can make a positive impact.
10. Your past doesn’t decide your future
Tony believes that the past is not a determinant of the things yet to come. In his own words, “The past doesn’t equal the future”. Circumstances and challenges are just things that you can solve in order to get to where you want to be. A smart and gritty approach can make a big difference on how you can re-shape the direction of your life. He even mentioned that “it is your decisions, and not your conditions, that determine your destiny”.
11. Be grateful
You cannot be fearful and grateful at the same time. Practicing gratitude every day will help you improve the quality of your life.
12. Fulfillment is important
Tony said, "Success without fulfillment is the ultimate failure." You need to master 2 skills: the science of achievement and the art of fulfillment. You must know what makes you happy and fulfilled as a person. No one can tell you this, only you can find out for yourself.
13. Make wise choices
Your life is shaped by your decisions and choices. If you want to change your life, it's vital to make the right choices, from the action you take, the habit you make and the meaning you give things. In his documentary "I Am Not Your Guru", Tony said, "Life always happens for us, not to us." If you can look at it this way, you will have the power to change and create your dream life.
14. Be happy now
Are you waiting for something to happen before you can make yourself to feel happy? If so, you need to practice feeling good now. You don't have to wait to achieve your goals to allow yourself to feel happy. You can just feel good for no reason. What makes you happy? Progress! Because it equals happiness. Every day, do something to move you closer to your goals and you will feel alive and happy.
